A TOTAL of 11 Ripley runners, five ladies and six men turned out for Saturday’s first fixture of the North Midlands Cross Country League which was held at Markeaton Park in Derby.

There were respective fields in the senior men and ladies races providing some good competition for the runners as they came from all over Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire to compete, the races consisted of a 6 km race for the ladies and a 10 km race for the men, both races around the parkland of Markeaton.

First back for Ripley ladies was Caroline Moss in 36th place in a great time of 29.20 next back was Joanne Howett in 57th in a time of 31.27, Paula Brudenell 68th 32.27, Eleanor Robinson 71st 32.53 and Antoinette Franco 105th 39.43.

First back for the men was Dean (rlf) Taylor in 111th place in a brilliant time of 42.23, not far behind was Richard Bunda Phillis in 113th place 42.30, Mark Tomlinson 116th 42.50, Simon English 138th place 44.47, Jerry Bateman 149th 45.30, Karl Tietz 152nd 45.47.

On the Sunday the Merrill 10km was the race for two of our Ripley runners, a relatively flat multi terrain course with twists and turns and high wind.

Dean Taylor was the first back for Ripley in 17th place in a superb time of 37.20 while Lucy Holmes came back 3rd lady and 40th altogether in a great time 40.21

On the same day Matt Jones and Wayne Smithurst from Ripley RC did the Windgather 13.5-mile fell part of the Acellerate Gritstone series race near Buxton a scenic course with 2,500 foot of climb with rocks and boulders to contend with along the way.

Wayne Smithurst was first back in 47th place in a great time of two hours and three mins then Matt Jones was next back and the 2nd vet 40 in 57th place in a time of two hours four mins 30 secs and sixth place overall in the series w ell done Matt!

Also there was the Kimberley and District Striders 10km Goose Fair Gallop 179 competitors racing along roads, bridleways and footpaths around Kimberley.

First back for Ripley was Wayne Yearwood in 27th place with a time of 45.10, Jerry Bateman 33rd 46.58, Eleanor Robinson 89th 52.54, Lorraine Griffiths 126th 58.30.
