Cllr John Walker, Alfreton town mayor, has presented a cheque for £500 to Alfreton Swimming Club.

The cheque was presented to Margaret Nally, president of the swimming club, who was accompanied by other officials, helpers and some of the young members of the club.

The grant money will be used to help fund a swimming gala and replace some of the club’s trophies.

Alfreton Town Council is aware that running a swimming club is expensive, mainly due to the high cost of hiring facilities, and this in itself can make swimming beyond the reach of some people.

Cllr John Walker said: “The town council is delighted to support swimming in Alfreton and I was pleased to make the presentation and to see the keenness from the young people who are members of the Club.

“We hope that the grant will go some way to encouraging young people to become involved in swimming.”
