There was a good turn out of 54 players for the first August Bank Holiday darts open hosted by the Ripley Elite Darts Singles League with a very strong field coming from all over the Midland.

Pre-tournament favourite Mark Hylton set about beating a host of Redsl lads on the way to the first semi final the world ranked number 33 in the current PDC ranking order of merit came across another REDSL player Daz Brown who showed great character in coming back from 4-2 down to win a last leg thriller which had the watching crowd on the edge of their seats .

Mark was very gracious in defeat and was a true gent all day offering his advice to all local players, a proper down to earth humble fella whose feet are still firmly on the ground as he tries to make a honest living in the realms of the fierce PDC.

The second semi-final saw another REDSL lad, Ilkeston’s Matt Padgett defeat Chesterfield’s Kev Rimmer 5-2 in a high-scoring game.

The final saw Brown take his second successive title at the Somercotes venue winning 6-3 in legs with winning legs of 13, 14, 15, 18, 20 and 22 darts including 130 and 120 checkouts and an average of 27.49.

Padgett’s winning legs came in 17, 18, and 22 darts with an average of 24.49.

All in all, it was a great day and a well-organised event with all rounds up to last 16 played within 90 minutes mainly thanks to the top efforts of Brin Johnson, Dawn Buckley and Tracey Johnson.

Thanks also go to Kerri Buckley for the raffle which raised £57 and to the match board sponsors, Des Cooper and Somercotes Club owner Steve Heenan for his continued support of the competitions and league.
