Amber Valley Hornets remain second in the league after a 5-2 win over Belper III.

The first league game of 2015 saw the Hornets settle well from the whistle and they took a two goal lead within the first 10 minutes of the game.

They opened the scoring with a thundering shot from Charlotte Welsby and then a typical jinking run from Sarah Joyce led to the second.

Jennie Bowmer at the top of midfield was controlling the centre of the park well and both Welsby and Joyce scored again.

Joyce turned provider when the Hornets found themselves with a two on one with the Belper keeper and she slipped the ball to Bev Allan at the left post to slap the ball home.

With a 5-0 score line the Hornets looked set to control the game, but Belper pushed forward determined to get back in contention and they did so just before the break with a penalty flick that was pushed with great precision into the bottom corner of the net.

The change of ends brought about a change in play and saw Belper use their youthful skills and turn of speed to great effect.

The Belper defence started to move the ball around the back well and pull the Hornets midfield from one side of the park to the other and they coupled some fine team moves together with some surging individual runs that tore apart the Hornets and soon led to a second goal being scored.

Rachael Warner and Dawn Spendlove at the heart of the Hornets defence cleared up on a number of occasions just when it looked like the Belper forwards would have a clear shot at goal.

Chances were kept to a minimum from that point on as Amber Valley held on to claim three vital points.
