FOR well over 20 years, a series of sporting events have been held in and around Derby, Belper and Whatstandwell over the festive period and they are again being promoted with the additional of a duathlon relay.
On Wednesday 14 December, the 4th in a series of 8 Derby Midweek Races take place from the Alvaston and Boulton Crcket Club on a fast, flat and traffic free certified course with a 1 mile race at 7pm and a 5km race at 7.20pm. These races have proved popular with runners and joggers and have seen appearances of Olympic athletes and also members of the Loughborough-based British Triathlon squad.
Tuesday 27 December sees the running of the annual Queen’s Head 5km road race in Belper at 12 noon on a gently undulating out-and-back course from Crich Lane, Belper.
On New Year’s Eve, the Milford Duathlon, consisting of a run of 2.5 miles followed by an 11.3 mile bike loop and a 2nd run, starts from the Milford Social Club at 10am but is already oversubscribed.
However, the new duathlon relay on 2 January from the same venue and on the same course still has a couple of places available.
The New Year’s Day Hangover Five Mile Road Race starts from near the Derwent Hotel, Whatstandwell at 11am and has always been a popular way for joggers to start their new year in a positive frame of mind despite the course being quite hilly.
Finally, the opening fell races of the year take place from 10.30am in Peat Pits and Shining Cliff Woods on Sunday 8 January with runs for 6 year olds upwards...often the eldest runners is well into their 70’s. The event HQ is the Bear Inn, Alderwasley
