Division One – Sawley & Long Eaton Park 212-6 (22pts) beat Marehay 211 all out (7pts) by 4 wickets
Marehay travelled to West Park to face second place Sawley & Long Eaton Park, looking to build upon last week’s success against Staveley but came undone in a closely fought encounter.
Sawley won the toss and asked Marehay to bat first on a wicket that looked a little green
Waldo Lategan looked to carry on from his century last week and scored three boundaries with nice drives but was then given out LBW to a ball that nipped back and bounced considerably from Barry White for 12.
Andy Walters and Gaz Buckley set about rebuilding the innings from 43-3, playing watchfully in difficult batting conditions. Walters (32) unluckily bottom edged a short ball from Sean Roberts and was followed in the same over by Stephen Lee (0) to leave the score 85-5.
James Kyte joined Buckley and they took the score to 119 before Buckley (36) was caught behind off Jeff Glover and Dave Buckley (6) was next to fall in unfortunate fashion as he edged a ball onto the wicketkeeper’s knee only for it to loop up to slip.
Good batting from Kyte (36), Tom Burke (37) and Rich Wood (25) took the score past 200 and eventually closed on 211.
Kyte and Dean Mills took the new ball and started well, with Kyte getting first reward by clean bowling Gary Birley in the third over. This brought Australian Roberts to the crease It was he and Andy Rhodes who took the score past 100 at drinks. But 109-2 became 128-5 as Rhodes was dismissed by Camm and then Dave Buckley bowled Steve Brown and Tom Pepper.
But Roberts reached his century as he slowly took the home side towards their target and this was eventually achieved with just eight balls to spare.
Marehay were left feeling disappointed, as the rub of the green didn’t go their way.
