Wragg lands world kickboxing title
WRAGSTERS Kickboxing Club have a new world champion after Andy ‘the Hammer’ Wragg won the WUMA PRO World Super-middleweight title at Alfreton Leisure Centre.
Ripley man Wragg, 41, was awarded victory after his opponent, Mark ‘Iceman’ Smith was disqualified for an illegal move.
Andy’s game plan for the 12 two-minute rounds was to take Smith, a renowned fast starter, into the later rounds.
Smith won the first three rounds before Wragg, a slow starter, came back and won rounds four and five.
Just into round six, Smith was blowing heavily and had hit wragg with all he had in the previous rounds.
A desperate measure saw Smith perform a head throw on Wragg, an illegal move in full contact kickboxing.
Wragg hit the ropes with the back of his legs and landed awkwardly on his head and neck.
The medics at ringside tended to Wragg and the referee immediately disqualified Smith which left Andy to be announced as world champion.
The title fight topped an action-packed night which had 14 fights on the card and which produced a mix of amateur and pro kickboxing bouts with over 350 fight fans in attendance.
The Wragsters club had a total of 12 fighters on the bill with four of the younger juniors doing demonstration bouts as a show starter.
A light contact bout saw the senior fighters kick-off with 14-year-old Wragsters fighter Ebony Upton take on 18-year-old Katie Hughes from Worcestershire, Ebony taking a points win after three rounds.
Ryan Freeman took part in a controlled full contact bout against semi contact world champion Ricky Hopkins.
A good contest with plenty of action saw Freeman get his hand raised at the end.
Lee Graves fought in his first ever full contact bout against Wolverhampton’s Adrian O’Donavon.
A close three-round war ended with O’Donavon edging ahead on the judges scorecards.
Arran Kentrick faced Birmingham’s unbeaten Jamie Beech in a close, hard three-round battle, the decision couldhave gone either way but Beech took the win.
Richard Dodson took on Tewksbury’s James Pollard in a full contact debut. A three-round war ended with Pollard running out of steam and Dodson winning by technical knockout.
A controlled full contact bout saw heavyweight hotshot Lewis Godwin against Adam White, a good technical battle for these two big lads.
