Amber Valley Hornets returned to action in the Derbyshire Division One in emphatic fashion at the weekend, beating Ashbourne 2nds 6-0.
With last week’s match postponed due to a frozen pitch, the Hornets were fully aware that, as the other league games were played, they were now sitting third in the table and a gap was starting to develop at the top of the table.
A quick head count soon showed that Ashbourne had only fielded ten players and, with this in mind, a formation change was made that saw the Hornets on the attack from the first whistle.
Their pressure soon paid off when Sarah Joyce opened the scoring and, as the Hornets surged forward, Sarah was on the scoresheet three times more before the break, as was Bev Allan, who deflected the ball home from a well worked penalty corner.
The second half saw Ashbourne much more on the attack but Rach Warner held the defence together well and Dawn Spendlove commanded the midfield to ensure clear cut chances for Ashbourne were kept to a minimum.
Ashbourne were also making their way into the Hornets D much more and their pressure was awarded with a penalty corner.
Sarah Joyce was running one and ,as she sprinted to the top of the D, she intercepted Ashbourne’s shot, ran the ball from defence, passed to Bev Allan on the halfway line, who took the ball into Ashbourne’s 25 before finding Dawn Spendlove at the top of the D.
Dawn passed the ball back to Sarah who had joined the attack, who again found Bev at the left post.
Her cross fell to Sarah Poplar to scramble the ball across the line to complete the scoring and round off an impressive 6-0 victory.
