Five Ripley Running Club members made the pleasant journey down to Stamford in Lincolnshire last Sunday to compete in the Stamford Running Club-organised St Valentine’s 30k race.
The one-lap course gently undulates in places sufficiently to make it a fair challenge for the 750 entrants. On this occasion, the weather conditions were near perfect with a beautiful clear sky and virtually no wind.
Ripley’s first man home was Ryan Ball in 123rd out of the 630 finishers, in a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes and 45 seconds. This was the first time Ryan has raced further than 13 miles so it was confirmation that his training is going well for the Virgin London Marathon on April 13 where he will make his debut at 26.2 mile running in this flagship event.
In second place at Stamford for Ripley RC and also running in this year’s Virgin London Marathon was Dennis Holmes, who was very pleased with his time of 2.25.09 and 203rd position as he will be competing in the veteran 50 category at London this year for the first time and will be happy to achieve anything sub 3.45 in that great race.
Third man in for Ripley was club captain Karl Tietz in 284th position and a time of 2.31.25 which could have been a little quicker had he not stopped a couple of times with a “dead foot” but was never going to challenge his own personal best on this course of 2 hours 5 minutes set many years ago.
Completing the Ripley line-up were two ladies who are both in serious spring marathon training mode at present. Cathy Cresswell who will be racing the Windermere marathon in May finished the 30k or 18.6 miles at Stamford in 2.39.31 for 353rd position while Victoria Leach who will be running the Manchester marathon in the first week of April achieved comfortably her sub 3-hours target finishing in 2.5.22 for 499th position from the 630 finishers.
Ripley Running Club meets every Tuesday at 6.45pm at Ripley Leisure Centre and encourages runners of all abilities to come and join for a run. For more information see www.ripleyrunningclub.com
