Rhinos are knocked out of President’s Trophy

Rhinos were just edged out of the Derbyshire President’s Trophy quarter-final 5-0 by Creswell Crusaders 2nds.

Ripley had the advantage of the wind and slope in the first-half but despite having the majority of territory, lacked the final cutting edge to turn this into points.

Creswell defended well and had powerful runners in their centres who kept the Rhino defence on their toes.

Half-time came with the game scoreless and now the visitors had the best of the conditions.

Ripley dug deep to defend but the key score came just on the hour when the home side were turned over at a ruck and the visitors used slick passes to exploit the gaps in the redrawn Rhino defensive line and burst through to score what turned out to be the only points of the game.

Ripley tried to find the equalising score but again lacked the final precision in attack and Creswell defended their 5-0 lead until the final whistle to come off winners.

The Rhinos knew that another improved display deserved more reward but the last moments of precision needed were lacking.

Prop Matt Fagan deservedly won the BAB Plumbing & Heating man of the match award for his superb work in the front row in only his third game there.
