New deal for Wainwright

David Wainwright

David Wainwright

Left-arm spinner David Wainwright has been handed a four-year contract as reward for his outstanding performances this season with Derbyshire CCC.

The Yorkshire-born bowler has been a revelation for Derbyshire since he travelled south from Headingley Carnegie last autumn in the search for greater first team opportunities.

Wainwright made an immediate impact on first-class debut for Derbyshire when he propelled the side to a memorable victory against Northamptonshire back in April. With the game finely poised going into day four, Wainwright took control with an unbroken spell of 26 overs that yielded remarkable figures of 6-33.

Wainwright’s first-class record with the ball this year has been particularly impressive, with 27 wickets at an average of 27 apiece, three five-wicket hauls and over a century of maiden overs.

Head coach Karl Krikken said: “David’s performances have been magnificent this season. He’s been a key element in our success so far and a highly popular member of the playing staff with his teammates and supporters alike.

“A spinner who can take wickets or bowl containing spells is so important to any team and David has proved himself well capable of carrying out both roles to perfection, as well as chipping in with handy runs in the middle-order. He’s an exceptional all-round cricketer in the prime of his career.”

Chairman Chris Grant said: “While the main thrust of Derbyshire’s future cricket strategy is to back homegrown players, clearly this is a long-term plan and needs to be tempered by the fact that the club has some excellent established players whose continued presence is crucial both for their contribution on the field and their role in bringing on the younger players.

“David clearly fits into this category and a four year contract demonstrates that he shares the club’s ambition for a successful future.”
