Ripley Rascals Lifesavers made a fantastic start to their jam-packed 2014 events calendar at the SLSGB National speed competition.

In the heavily contested Nippers category, Rascals took on 22 coastal teams and held their own in the fins, board and manikin carry races.

Supported by their coach, Jennie Lockwood, Aaron Johnson, Luke Waterfall, Kezia Emerton, Jessica Hancock and Georgina Holbird all secured top ten finishes and there were also strong swims from Ben King, Dan Waterfall, Molly Emerton, Megan Emerton, Emma Somes and Rebecca Somes.

In the Youth category, a fantastic team effort earned Rascals an outstanding fourth place from 24 competing clubs with numerous personal best times being smashed.

National champion titles were won by Jessica Hancock (two gold, one bronze) and Olivia Broughton (one gold, one bronze). The massive medal haul also included Georgina Holbird (three silver, one bronze), Frazer Crump (1 silver, 2 bronze), Jess Lockwood (two bronze) with top ten placings from Cameron Hutchinson, Alistair Hutchinson, George Spendlove, Fern Jackson, Anthony Mason, Sam Wesson and Susannah Allsop. In the team events, Rascals continued to shine with the girls winning gold in the medley and manikin relay and silver in the obstacle relay and the boys taking silver in the manikin and medley relays and bronze in the obstacles.

The Rascals now boast four National Champions: Karen Denning, Olivia Broughton, Anthony Mason and Jessica Hancock.

Coaches Jeremy Johnson and Dan Woodthorpe have the task of preparing the squad for the Surf Lifesaving National Championships in August and RLSS Championships later in 2014.
