Alfreton Town U15s 2

After forming this season, Ripley Rangers Girls managed to get their first point of the season against high flying Alfreton Town.

The months of hard work of training and playing matches by all the girls and coaching staff at Ripley Rangers are starting to pay off.

A fiercely contested local derby saw Rangers on the front foot initially as Suranne Carmen and Charlotte Haywood were a constant thorn in Alfreton’s side with some great movement up front.

Tierney Hunt was putting in some combative tackles and good distribution in midfield and when Alfreton did threaten, they were thwarted with some timely interceptions from Leanne Grundy and Tori Wilson.

Tierney Hunt came close twice to scoring for Ripley, once when an Alfreton defender headed off the line and secondly when a free kick went inches over the bar.

Moments later, Rangers broke the deadlock when Charlotte Haywood sprung the offside trap. The Alfreton keeper parried her shot but Charlotte Haywood followed up to net the rebound.

Alfreton went on the offensive but Zoe Varney made great saves from Fern Burley on two occasions. Suranne Carmen then went close for Rangers.

On the stroke of half-time, Alfreton were level with a penalty for a shirt pull. Fern Burley made no mistake from the spot to level the scores at 1-1.

In the second half, Alfreton got a better tempo to their game and Rangers had to defend doggedly with Zoey Varney again making a couple of good saves.

After a succession of corners, Alfreton’s pressure paid off when the ball broke on the edge of the box and Chelsea Morris scored with a powerful drive into the far corner.

Rangers were down but not out and a tactical masterstroke by Ash Burdell, Rangers’ manager to put Tierney Hunt back in midfield paid dividends.

Rangers went for it and all the team put maximum effort in with Laura Shillingford digging deep to win tackle after tackle.

Rangers hard work paid off when some great play saw Charlotte Haywood coolly finishing and celebrating with a somersault.

There was still time for Rangers to put a penalty the wrong side of the post and to skim the crossbar in the final minute with a freekick.

Congratulations to all the girls of both sides on a great game.
