Holbrook hit seven to progress in FA Vase

Holbrook Sports smashed Birstall United 7-2 to progress in this season’s FA Vase competition.

The Brookies made three changes for the tie, Paul Fisher returning up front, James Ozmen in the centre of midfield with Ollie Hancock making his first start wide on the right.

Within ten minutes Holbrook had the iniative when a sweeping move down the left saw Paul Fisher side-foot home a Cory Bowler cross.

Shortly after with the Birstall defence still in turmoil, another left side cross from James Ozmen was headed in by Marc Stone.

A 20-minute spell of Holbrook possession followed with Sports knocking the ball around with confidence.

On 35 minutes Holbrook took the game totally away from Birstall. An exquisite cross from Ollie Hancock was headed in by Vaughn Hallsworth and and two minutes later the veteran striker broke free and smashed home.

On the stroke of halftime James Ozmen headed home a fifth goal at the far post.

Just after half time Holbrook made three changes to give players valuable minutes. Birstall came out with more desire and immediately got their reward with a clinical finish.

But 55 minutes in Holbrook restored their five-goal advantage when Niall Mather waltz through the defence before rounding the keeper and walking the ball into the goal.

As normally happens the game fell into lull but both teams added soft goals. Birstall scored a second after a hopeful cross to the backpost was tapped but again Sports immediately responded and again walked through the Birstall defence for Paul Fisher to tap home.

Team: D Graves, G Whitehead, M Stones, N Mather, O Hancock, J Ozmen, G Moran, C Bowler, P Fisher, V Hallsworth.

Subs: D Rile, K Jellyman, T Nadin, S Ridgard, J Gregory.

Manager Paul Romney was delighted with his side’s performance. He reflected: “Stunning first half performance and we fully deserved the five goals.

“We kept the ball very well and played at a very nice tempo for the first time this season. The tempo and commitment wasn’t the same in the second half but the job was already done.

“It was exactly what was needed after last weekend mauling and I am pleased we look like we have learned the right lessons.”
