Forthcoming fixtures for Heanor Town in the NCEL

Heanor Town joint manager Glenn Kirkwood saw last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Retford United as a big learning curve for his team.

But he was obviously pleased with the first half performance which the Lions dominated for long stretches.

“I thought we were the best team in the first half, and we had a few good chances to turn those thoughts into reality. In this league, and at this level, you have to take your chances otherwise you suffer the consequences.

“It was unfortunate to concede the first goal as we did, direct from a corner, but that’s football. Then two errors cost us two more goals and there was no way back.

“Clubs at this level are professional in their approach to games and that is what our players have to learn if we are to become a good Step Five side.”

But it has to be remembered that Heanor could hardly have been given a more difficult fixture to start the season with.

Retford were the reigning champions and they have the backing of some good support both on and off the field.

Next Saturday will see the start of the FA Cup competition with Heanor journeying into Leicestershire to take on Shepshed Dynamo, who were relegated from the Northern Premier League last season and are now playing their football out of the Midland Alliance. The kick off at the Dovecote is 3pm and should the game end in a draw, the replay will be on the Town Ground on Wednesday, August 15 with a 7.45pm kick off.

The Reserves start their season next Saturday with an away game at Coronation Park against newly formed Eastwood Town Reserves side. The game kicks off at 3pm.
