Duffield CC set to open a new second ground

DUFFIELD Cricket Club have announced that their second ground, the Okra Oval, will officially open on Bank Holiday Monday, June 4, at 3pm.

Mike Hendrick, the former Derbyshire and England fast bowler will bowl the first ball.

Mike commented, “It’s great to see cricket thriving at Duffield and I am very excited to be involved in the opening of this very successful project.”

Denis Saunders, chairman of Duffield CC said, “It has taken a lot of time, energy and effort on the part of many people to obtain funding and create a new cricket square and outfield.

“I would like to thank all who donated to the project, particularly Duffield Parish Council, Sport England and, of course, the Okra Restaurant.”

In 2010 Duffield signed a sponsorship agreement with the Okra Restaurant to name the new ground the Okra Oval; a common practice among county clubs and, of course, football clubs, but the first by a club side in Derbyshire.

Mohamed Saddique, Manager of the Okra Restaurant commented: “ We are proud to be associated with Duffield CC and the new ground. We try our best to be part of the local community and are especially pleased to see that it is being used mainly by Duffield’s junior teams.”

Duffield Cricket Club was founded in 1878 and plays at Eyes Meadow, Duffield.

The club currently fields three senior teams in the Derbyshire County League, a Sunday side and nine junior teams.

The junior section has enjoyed spectacular growth in the past ten years, going from three teams and around 50 members to a membership today of 150.

The second ground project was started in 2009 and cost in the region of £30,000.

The project was self-financing. Individual donations totalled £6,000, the Parish Coucil gave £9,600 of Section 106 funding linked to the Ecclesbourne Meadows housing development and the Okra Restaurant gave a sizeable donation.

Sport England gave £10,000 of matched funding under the “Sportsmatch” scheme.

The club was able to claim back a further £2,000 in tax from HMRC due to its status as a Community Amateur Sports Club.
