Belper HC continue their bright start to the season

Holbrook Sports made one change to the starting line-up for Saturday’s home game with Barrow Town but changed the formation to a 3-5-2.

Gav Whitehead started but Sports were without striker Paul Fisher.

Barrow started brightly and after four minutes took the lead. Gav Whitehead brought down Michael Papparozzi and Craig Noble stepped up to score the resulting penalty past Danny Graves.

Barrow were in the ascendancy but a loose pass in midfield found Niall Mather and he smashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the top corner for the equaliser. The game became end-to-end and it was Barrow who retook the lead on 30 minutes when Jamie Allen slotted home, only for Holbrook to equalise straight away. James Ozmen pinched the ball off the Barrow defence and squared for Cory Bowler to make it 2-2.

The second half continued as an end-to-end encounter with Danny Graves having to make two very good saves before the Barrow keeper pulled out an incredible save to deny Cory Bowler.

With the game looking like it was drifting to a draw, Barrow snatched a winner, Calum Ross firing home from eight yards. The officials ignored Holbrook’s protests that he was offside and, to their dismay, awarded the goal.

Afterwards, manager Paul Romney said: “I’m gutted for the lads, to be denied in that manner late on was hard to take.

“We played exceptionally well against another very good side but didn’t get the result we deserved.”
