Ambergate storm to victory in second half

Ambergate FC produced a excellent second half display to progress in the junior cup. Ambergate trailed 2-1 at half time after a first half that saw two goalkeeper errors.

Firstly Jason Hooley somehow managed to spill the ball into his own goal under no real pressure. But Andruw Stevenson levelled matters when Mackworth’s goalkeeper let a tame shot through his grasp.

Mackworth went into the lead in controversial fashion as ‘gate defender Jack Ferguson seemed to get bundled over before the ball was crossed and bundled home.

This also caused a injury to goalkeeper Jason Hooley, so Ambergate played an hour with centre half Matt Magill in goal.

The sense of injustice maybe played a part in ‘gate’s second half display, a much more determined and energetic display.

The equaliser came from a free kick, struck home with a slight deflection by Craig Tipton. Ambergate led for the first time when the ball fell to Richard Tomlinson 20 yards out and he steered it home via a post.

Ambergate had the bit between their teeth and controlled the game. Mackworth still looked a threat, mainly from set pieces, so gate needed a fourth goal to ensure victory.

That fourth came from a corner, Bestwick swung it in and Sam Hicking buried a strong header. The icing on the cake came at the death, good work from Stevenson released Josh Squires who coolly slotted it home for his first Ambergate goal.
