Ambergate smash nine past Bargate

MRA Challenge Cup, first round

Ambergate 9, Bargate Rovers Reserves 2

Ambergate returned to the Thomas William Ground for the first time this season and enjoyed a comfortable victory in the Divisional Cup against local rivals Bargate Rovers Reserves.

Ambergate made five changes to the starting XI that won midweek with Jason Hooley,Sam Barsby, Darren Mason and Richard Clark returning and Josh Squires coming in to make his debut.

The hosts were in control from the start and took the lead after ten minutes when a corner from Bestwick was powerfully headed in by Jody Waldron at the front post into the net.

The second followed shortly after and was almost a repeat of the first. Another Bestwick corner was swung in and Richard Clark got the second with his head.

Ambergate enjoyed some good possession and neat work down the left between Sam Hicking, Jack Ferguson and Josh Squires allowed Hicking some space and he squeezed his shot over the line for the third.

Before the half-hour mark, Ambergate were 4-0 up and the goal was again similar to the first two. Bestwick swung a corner in and Matt Magill, Jody Waldron and Richard Clark all fought each other in the air for it but it was Clark who got his head on it and the ball dropped into the top corner.

Shortly after, Tom Aston got his first goal of the season. A Sam Barsby long throw went into the Bargate six-yard box and Aston put his head on it unchallenged and into the net for the fifth.

The final goal of a good all-round first half performance came when an Ambergate corner was not cleared fully by Bargate and Tom Astongot down the right with pace and skill and crossed to Jody Waldron who tapped it in unmarked.

It was Bargate who got the first goal of the half as a long throw-in was won in the air by Bargate’s Joe Cluskey and the ball looped in at the back post.

Ambergate were not fazed by this a could have had a couple more goals before their seventh arrived after 66 minutes. A chipped ball over the Bargate defence by substitute, and debutant,Sean Kinder landed at Sam Hicking’s feet and he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Danny Keen made first first appearance of the season as he replaced Darren Mason and looked eager to get into the game and worked well with Kinder down the right for the remainder of the game.

More chances came and went but Richard Clark got his hat-trick goal after 76 minutes. Clark got the ball, beat the right back and cut in onto his right foot and curled it into the bottom corner.

The final Ambergate goal came with just over five minutes left as Sam Hicking rounded off his man-of-the-match display with his own hat-trick goal. Hicking pounced onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and drove it into the roof of the net.

Dean Jones got a consolation for Bargate in the final seconds with a neat chip over Hooley from 18 yards.
