Ambergate CC promoted by just two points

Ambergate CC first XI gained promotion to the Derbyshire County Cricket League first division in dramatic fashion after the final weekend

double-header.

The side responded to a losing draw at home against promotion rivals Ockbrook & Borrowash seconds on Saturday to gain a winning draw at Denby seconds on Sunday and stay ahead of Ockbrook by just two points.

On Saturday, Ambergate (12pts) 208-9 [46 overs] (Wesley Thomas 43, David Whiteley 75*, G Young 3-44) drew with Ockbrook & Borrowash seconds (17pts) 224-6 [46 overs] (M Wood 62, D Wood 95*).

Sunday saw Denby seconds (10pts) 164-9 [46 overs] (Ross Perry-Taylor 38, Mark Payne 41) drew with Ambergate (16pts) 178-6 [46 overs] (Jonathan Heath 58).

Ockbrook achieved a 27-pointer on Sunday as they beat visiting Aston-on-Trent by 88 runs but Ambergate’s haul of 16 points from their trip to Denby seconds ensured they finished a tremendous season in second place and are deservedly promoted to division one.

And spare a thought for a young Belper Meadows thirds side who were dismissed for just 16 all out in their final County League Division 8 North league game of the season.

The first seven Belper bowlers were all out without scoring and only two players actually got any runs, Wykeham Bosworth-Nightingale top scoring with five not out.

Nine of those runs came from the extras column but the most staggering statistic was that Swanwick bowler Richard Leam took all ten wickets at a cost of just four runs!

Leam’s exploits saw him set a new Swanwick club and Derbyshire County Cricket League record.
