Ambergate are leaders

Nutbrook (7pts) 163 all out [46 overs] (S Sanderson 46, R Henshaw 36, S Ahmed 3-23) lost to Ambergate (27pts) 164-9 [46 overs] (W Thomas 36, R Heath 34, F Holdt 5-43, R Henshaw 3-46) by 1 run

AMBERGATE CC are the new leaders of the Derbyshire County Cricket League ‘the follow on’ Division Two after a last-gasp victory over Nutbrook at the EMEB Ground, the home side perishing on the last ball of the innings.

Adam Hutchinson and Benjamin Dawes were at the crease needing two runs off the last ball for a Nutbrook victory but Dawes was run out desperately scrambling for the run that would have seen the game tied.

As it was, smart work by Ambergate’s Tom Holmes left his side victors by a single run.

Both sides struggled all day with the bat but Wes Thomas (35) and Rob Heath (34) did enough to see Ambergate to a fairly respectable 164 for 9 despite the best efforts of Richard Henshaw (3-46) and South-African FC Holdt whose excellent bowling was rewarded with figures of 5 for 43.

Matt Ball (2-29) and Liam Wallace (2-48) gave Ambergate the upper hand after the break but Nutbrook fought back through Steven Sanderson (46) and Richard Henshaw (36).

The excellent Shazad Ahmed (3-23) removed both to restore Ambergate’s advantage but Russell Henshaw (19) and Hutchinson (22*) clawed Nutbrook back into contention.

Wes Thomas (2-33) ended Henshaw’s fight and further wickets for Ball and Ahmed left the match finely poised and in the end it was Ambergate who held their nerve best.
