After Saturday’s washout, Langley Mill United 1sts were in Marston’s Smooth Trophy Second Round action on Sunday at Division One side Sawley and LE Park.
Skipper Andrew Bailey lost yet another toss and the Millers batted first.
It wasn’t long before they were in trouble when both openers fell with just 16 on the board.
The repair work began with Salmons and Harrison, who patiently batted the Millers up to 48 off 20 overs.
They both fell within a few overs of each other, Harrison for 17 and Salmons for 36.
Paul Bailey (50) and Danny Hanson (17) forged another mini partnership to take the Millers to three figures.
Some useful hitting late on took the Millers to 168 all out in the last over.
With the weather looking poor in the distance, interuptions looked likely.
In the tenth over, Bacon bowled Brown for 13 with the score on 35. Sawley pushed on and well ahead of the rate when skipper Bailey and Australian Hatton came on, bowling very well in tandem. Sawley slumped to 91-7 and the Millers sniffed victory.
By the 34th over Hatton, (4-26) and Bailey (3-33) had ripped through the middle order to leave Sawley 119-8 with 50 runs needed still. Bacon came back into the attack and took a wicket to tilt the game in the Millers’ favour with 43 still required. But Lyas held his nerve (44 not out) and with the help of Barry White (12 not out) saw Sawley home with an over to spare.
There was disappointment for the Millers, as they pushed Sawley all the way but to concede 44 extras in the field had cost them the game.
This weekend, the Millers entertain Tutbury at Station Road and the 2nds travel to Darley Dale. Both are 1.30pm starts.
n On Sunday, June 29, the Millers will be hosting a Twenty20 day with the four teams coming from Langley Mill, Matlock, Clifton and Sawley. The action begins at 11am with Langley Mill taking on Division One side Matlock.
Clifton will take on Sawley at 2pm and the winners of both games will play each other at 5pm. More details will follow closer to the weekend.
