Two golfers from Langley Mill have earned a place in the final of a national matchplay tournament to be held in Morocco next February.
Craig Parker, 31, and 42-year-old Ben Scott, who play at Erewash Valley Golf Club, progressed through two regional stages to reach finals of the 2014 Morocco Matchplay Pairs, a sponsored competition organised and powered by HowDidIDo - a golfing website that runs the club handicaps system all over the UK.
The duo will now head to the L’Amphitrite Palace Resort & Spa for the finals, where they will compete against five other pairs from the UK who also qualified, whilst competitors in the seniors, singles and mixed pairs event will also take part.
Craig, who used to play cricket regularly for Langley Mill United CC, said: “It’s the second time we’ve entered the competition but last year we got knocked out in the regional finals, which is the second of the three phases.
“This time we initially got through the area qualifiers again, which saw us playing rounds in a knockout format across the East Midlands.
“That meant we got into the regional finals again, and whereas last year we were in the north section played in Cheshire, this time we were put in the southern finals that took place at Castle Combe in Wiltshire.
“Having got to that stage last year we were a bit more mentally prepared and coped far better which helped a lot, and we ended up coming second overall which got us through.
“It was all about playing consistently well over the weekend and will be even more so for the finals which span five days.”
The pair will fly out to Morrocco on February 8 and play five rounds over five days to battle it out for the pairs title.
Craig added: “Our flights and accommodation are all paid for by HowDidIDo so it’ll be a fantastic experience - not bad considering it cost us just £15 each to enter!”
