The opening game of the season of the DCCL Division One season saw Marehay 1sts travel down the A38 to newly-promoted Rolleston.
Marehay skipper Richard Wood won the toss and put the home side in to bat.
Marehay were keen to see how the new signing of Australian overseas Matthew Doric would adjust to the conditions. James Kyte opened the bowling from the pavilion end and between them Doric and Kyte bowled tight overs before Marshall edged a good delivery from Kyte which was taken at full stretch by Bil Hartley.
Yates played some good shots while wickets fell at the other end, Dean Mills picking up a wicket with a good yorker trapping Paul Allen lbw. Wickets fell at regular intervals with Wood picking up two and the introduction of spin bowler Ben Perry-Taylor was an inspired change as the wicket became dusty and the older ball looked like it would grip and spin.
A solid display from Perry-Taylor saw him with figures of 3-20 off 11.4 overs. Doric picked up his first wicket for the club, bowling Ben Liversage in his second spell. Kyte was brought back into the attack, bowling a sharp three-over spell and claiming two quick wickets. Rolleston were all out for 134.
Openers Jonathan Bradder and Stephen Lee set about their task but Lee was soon out. Bradder was joined at the crease by Andy Walters and the new pairing played watchfully, accumulating slowly but solidly until Walter departed. Perry-Taylor joined Bradder in the middle and they moved the along nicely to 54-2 to restore a bit of order but Bradder (24) clipped ball from Nelson straight to midwicket.
A couple more wickets brought Kyte (23) and Doric (30 not out) to the crease and it was the Australian who scored the winning runs with six.
This was a great start and team performance to get the new season off to a flyer with a four-wicket victory. Next week sees Marehay host Quarndon.
