Shane Newton was on the scoresheet twice as South Normanton Athletic beat Southwell 3-0 to go top of the Central Midlands League.
It took just nine minutes for the Shiners to score thanks to Ryan Grainger, who pumped the free kick to Andrew Mottershead to head into the box for Shane Newton to shoot into the right of Southwell’s goal, but Newton wasn’t done yet and got Normanton’s second.
This came from another Ryan Grainger cross but from in his own half this time, the diagonal ball was to Shane Newton 20 yards out and, with the keeper running at him, quick thinking Newton headed the ball over the keeper and into the goal.
The second half saw Southwell getting frustrated and Markill Bailey was sent off on the hour for a foul on Joe Carter.
On the hour, a Andrew Motteshead 25-yard free kick had to tipped over the bar, but the third goal came from a Shane Newton run down the right,
Newton turned inside and a crossed to Ben Greenhalge to shoot home from seven yards. South Normanton have three games left and if they win them all they take the league title.
