South Normanton took the honours on Saturday in their Central Midlands League Black Dragon Division - South game at home to Belper United, beating their visitors 2-1.
South Normanton started brightly and were camped in the Belper half for long periods of the first half but it was Belper who scored first as a great cross allowed Jordan McRobie to head home from six yards. But Normanton took just a minute to level the score as they showed good football all round to get the ball to Thomas Leighton on the right. Leighton put the ball past the left back and ran. He just got to the ball and crossed to the back post for debutant Lee Sutton to head home from a yard.
Danny Roberts had a cracking shot from 23 yards which needed tipping over the bar, Andrew Mottershead had a goal disallowed for off side and there was a blow to Normanton when Shane Newton limped off with a hamstring injury but Chris Green was a fine replacement and the first half ended level at 1-1,
Belper came out the traps well in the second half and turned the game into a brilliant top of the table clash. Scott Whittingham in the South Normanton goal was the man of the match but on 86 minutes, after a good fightback from Normanton, they got the precious winning goal. It was a Danny Roberts’s run down the middle of the park and wide ball to Lee Sutton on the left. Sutton somehow got the cross into the box to find Andrew Mottershead, who, with a fine touch and a sublime strike, won the contest for the Shiners.
South Normanton Athletic are away at Holbrook St Michaels on Saturday, November 23, with a 2pm kick off.
Then they are at Pinxton on Wednesday, November 27 (7.30pm ko) in the Floodlit Cup.
