Heanor Town Juniors FC are looking to expand their flourishing youth set-up by running training sessions specifically for girls.

They are to take place at Heanor Welfare, on Ilkeston Road, Heanor, from 10am-11am, starting on Saturday, November 2.

The sessions, to be run by qualified and CRB-checked coaches, are aimed at girls in school years Six and Seven, and cost £2 a time.

Kevin O’Kine, chairman of Heanor Town Juniors, explained: “We have had girls playing for our boys teams in recent years but once they get to under 13s level, they have to stop playing in mixed teams.

“So we are looking at putting together a girls side and the Derbyshire FA is supporting us in this.

“I think there is a big interest out there in girls football for us to tap into, so we have got a pair of Level One coaches involved and I feel there should be no problem getting enough girls together for a team.

“Initially, we will look towards playing league football next season but before then there are plenty of friendlies that we could play this season if we get the players.”

The successful section currently runs 12 boys teams and Kevin feels the role as a development club is an important one, as are the strong links with Heanor Town FC.

“There’s a pathway there that could take lads through our youth section to under 18s level and then to Heanor Town u19s, reserves and first team if they’re good enough, and that’s very important to have in place.

“We’ve been running what we call a development group for the last couple of years for kids aged three and upwards, for them to learn some skills before they reach under sevens level. It’s been going really well, we’ve got about 45 kids involved.

“We think a girls team will be a good addition to the set-up here.

“I’d say about 75 per cent of our players come from the town itself and just about everyone else comes from a five-mile radius of Heanor.”
