Ripley Town’s promotion bid in the Midlands Regional Alliance Division One suffered a setback on Saturday when they lost 3-0 at home to fellow high-fliers Wirksworth Ivanhoe.
Ripley ended a bad week with a second successive defeat at the hands of Wirksworth as the visitors won comfortably to go top of the league.
With several key players unavailable, Ripley were always second best and went a goal down on 21 minutes when a fierce cross shot took a slight deflection to beat Town keeper Ryan Steeples.
It was 2-0 before the break when a corner was turned home as the visitors took control.
Ripley made two changes at the break as Nathan Gration and Matt Johnson, both back from injury, came on and for a while Town rallied.
Gration put a great chance straight at the keeper and Will Dennis somehow turned a cross over from right on the goalline.
But Wirksworth scored a third with a back post header and there was no way back for Ripley as their promotion hopes took a severe knock.
Ryan Steeples was outstanding in the Town goal to keep the score down to three in a game Ripley will quickly want to forget
This Saturday, Ripley Town travel to play Derby Rolls- Royce Reserves.
The kick off is at 3pm.
