For the second week running, Ripley Town scored five goals, this time as they eased in the second round of the MRA Junior Cup, beating visitors Punjab United 5-3.
Town started brightly and created chance after chance before taking the lead on 25 minutes as Sam Chambers’s pace took him clear of the Punjab defence and he tucked the ball away in style.
Then, the impressive Joe Crossley, in his fist start of the season, scored a quick brace.
The first was a classy finish inside the near post and then there was an outrageous flick that left the visiting keeper flapping.
The Derby-based side were then awarded a penalty to reduce the arrears to 3-1. Town themselves had a DJ Chatterton penalty saved just before the break but the lively striker made amends with a fine finish on 55 minutes to put Ripley in control.
However, the visitors rallied and pulled two goals back to set Ripley’s nerves jangling, before Ian Randall fired home Town’s fifth goal to seal a fine victory.
This Saturday sees Ripley travel to take on top of the league Rowsley Reserves (2.30pm kick off) in Division One of the Midlands Regional Alliance.
