Retford rode their luck to knock Selston out of the Notts Senior Cup following a 4-3 win in extra-time after the visitors missed THREE penalties.

Selston will have been left wondering what could have been as they hit the bar and missed two penalties in normal time before missing a further penalty with one minute of extra-time remaining.

Selston were in front after only two minutes as Perry Marriott found the net as Tom Fuller failed to collect a corner kick.

It could have been worse for Retford a couple of minutes later when Ben Moore saw his strike hit the underside of the bar and go to safety.

Craig Morley brought down Jay Cooper to concede a penalty, but Dominic Airie blazed the spot-kick well over the bar.

Retford levelled on 20 minutes thanks to a good strike from Leigh Hutchinson meeting a ball from Ben Muirhead.

On the stroke of half-time, Selston went back in front thanks to a goal from Joe Riley who did well to hit the target as Retford failed to defend.

The second half was only seconds old when another penalty was awarded to Selston, it was Airie again who stepped up to take it, and this time Fuller was in the way to block the shot and save to keep the scoreline down.

Retford continued to push, Morley heading wide, Wisdom-Lockwood firing at the keeper and a scramble unable to get the ball over the line to add to the home sides frustrations.

Finally on 74 minutes, Retford were back level as Hadley crossed for Josh Batty to loop a header over the keeper and into the back of the net.

The entertaining game went in to extra-time and Selston went back in front on 91 minutes when Jason Swannack’s ball didn’t reach Fuller and Damien James was able to put the ball over the stranded keeper and swing the pendulum back Selston’s way.

That lead only lasted two minutes when Leigh Hutchinson fired in his second of the game to level the scores.

It was a moment of magic from Josh Batty in the 98th minute to put United in front for the first time of the evening.

A superb effort from distance beat the keeper with a goal worthy of winning the game, but there were more thrills and spills to come in the final part of extra time.

With a minute of extra time remaining Selston were awarded a third penalty, which Fuller again saved to amazingly deny Jay Cooper. In stoppage time, Perry Marriott saw red for an off the ball challenge, his second yellow of the game to compound the misery for Selston, but they fought to the end, however it was Retford who will look forward to the draw for the next round of the competition.
