Railway get back on track

In A programme again truncated by the weather, RAILWAY (Alfreton) belied their bottom of the table position by inflicting a 5-1 defeat on visitors SOUTH WINGFIELD to put a dent in their Division One title challenge.

The home team enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession on a difficult surface and – unlike the previous week – converted chances they created into goals.

Wayne Cooke got a couple with the others being shared between Sam Rawson, Joe Wilkinson and Ben Bacon. Dave Fretwell scored a consolation goal for their opponents.

Whilst they still occupy the bottom rung of the league ladder, the gap is closing and there is reason for optimism in the Railway camp; undoubtedly they can look forward to a more productive New Year.

NORMANTON UNITED were made to fight hard to maintain their 100 per cent start in Division Two when they played host to DERBY ATHLETIC in a ding-dong encounter.

Both sides were committed to all out attack that made for a richly entertaining game in which the home side triumphed 6-5.

Paul Barnes, Johnny Hart, Jay Cooper (2), Richard Lee and Joe Johnson scored for the leaders whilst Athletic responded through Kev Morrow, Martin Hardy, Tom Joyce (2) and Matt Roberts.

MARLPOOL WHITE LION soon got back into top gear after the enforced break and their 7-2 demolition of HAYLOFT, who played their part in an open game ,takes them into second place.

James Boxall, Ashley Draper and Craig Charity each scored twice and Cory Bowler the other for the home team; Jordan Howe and Matthew Byard responding for the visitors.

There were goals aplenty in the third division too. OUT OF TOWN picked up their first win of the season and played a brand of football out of kilter with their lowly league position in hitting GENEROUS BRITON for six.

A Tom Stone hat-trick was the highlight with other goals being scored by Dan Cummings, Mark Walker and Robert Spencer that saw their side to a 6-2 victory.

Although their own pitch was declared unfit, AMBER ATHLETIC showed initiative in finding a ground that was playable for the visit of HILCOTE MW.

Their efforts were rewarded as they strolled to a 6-1 win thanks largely to the prolific Paul Hill who notched a hat-trick to bring his season’s goal tally to 19.

Shaun Smedley, Ian Carrington and Shaun Meynell weighed in with the others.

RIPLEY WHITE LION consolidated their position at the top of this league following a 7-4 away win at RIDDINGS ROVERS.

Unfortunately, no match details were provided in what was, clearly, an entertaining game.
