Belper 2nd XV 42
Ripley Rhinos 1sts 12
Rhinos took on Belper 2nds on the big pitch at Strutt’s Fields and ultimately found that possession doesn’t always mean a victory.
Ripley had an older squad out and Belper’s youth took advantage with four converted breakaway tries in the first half. Ripley replied with an interception try from outside centre Dave Trubee and one for scrum half Mitch Wilmott, after his pack had worked the fringes of the ruck well. Skipper Will Evans’s conversion saw his team 28-12 behind at the interval.
The second half was a repeat of the first in many ways with the maroons having the majority of possession and territory, but Belper tackling well and breaking away on occasion.
The home side scored an early try to make the game harder for Ripley. The maroons worked hard but lacked the cutting edge and Belper finished the game off with their sixth converted try.
Mitch Wilmott took the BAB Plumbing & Heating man of the match award from his teammates.
Rhinos have finished their rugby for 2012 and wish all readers a merry Christmas and happy new year.
