Lower order sides pick up much needed points

IT was a good day for teams at the wrong end of the divisions last Saturday.

It was particularly so in the Premier Division with five of the bottom six gaining points.

The team which didn’t was Chellaston who lost 6-2 at home to Belper United who leapfrogged the Derby side as a result.

Chellaston actually took a two-goal lead through Michael Tristam and Paul Brooks but Belper had levelled by half-time before taking control in the second half. Shaun Smith scored hit a four-timer for Belper with Jamie Sparkes and Eddie Bridges also on target.

Bottom team Sandiacre Town thrashed Newmount 7-1 after leading 6-1 at the break but they failed to get off of the bottom since Ashover drew 1-1 with Wirksworth Town.

Carl Musgave hit the Ashover goal with Wirksworth equalising with a last minute screamer.

Holbrook St Michaels, also in the lower reaches, drew 2-2 at Rowsley ‘86 who had Andrew Black and Andy Roome on target.

Cromford recorded a 2-1 win at Castle Donington Town thanks to goals from Danny Wildgoose and Steve Prime, Tom Ballard with the Donington reply.

Melbourne United hammered top-of-the-table visitors Willington 4-1. Dave Brough (2), Paul Swallow and Matt Brian doing the damage for United, Bev Hudson with the Willington reply.

Long Eaton United Reserves went down 2-0 at home to Derby Rolls-Royce Leisure.

It was also a good day for the lower order teams in division one with the bottom two picking up points.

Holbrook St Michaels Reserves drew 2-2 with Little Eaton while Derbyshire Amateurs beat Bargate Rovers 3-1, Jordan Butcher and Mark Barker both scored for Holbrook while Mark Hosker, Ashley Bravo and Liam Trowland got the Amateurs’ goals.

Ripley Town gained another point from a 2-2 home draw with second-placed Matlock Sports, Joz Walker and Lew Atkin on target for Ripley.

At the top of the table, with Mickleover RBL in cup action, they lost 2-1 to Swanwick Pentrich Road with Jordan McRobie scoring both of the Swans goals, Findern against Derby Royals became an important fixture.

Royals won it 4-0 to draw level with Matlock Sports in second place.

Richard Holmes scored the Belper United Reserves goal in a 1-1 draw with Pastures while Tommy Smith bagged both the Selston goals in a 2-2 draw with Allestree.

In division two, Castle Donington Town Reserves have folded which left Swanwick Pentrich Road Reserves with no game. This left Bargate Rovers Reserves at the foot and they went down 4-1 to Wirksworth Ivanhoe, Ash Taylor with the Bargate goal.

Pastures Reserves lost 5-3 to Mickleover RBL Reserves while Hilton Harriers lost 2-1 to Melbourne Dynamo Reserves.

Ambergate stopped the slide of those in the lower reaches as they beat Punjab United Reserves 4-0.

Derby Singh Brothers had the chance to go top but failed to take the chance when Selston Reserves held them to a 2-2 draw.

Derbyshire Cup

In Derbyshire Divisional Cup action, besides the Swanwick victory, Allenton United beat Punjab United 5-2 with goals from Adam Birch, Steve O’Connell, Danny Briscoe, Michael Meehan and David Rostrum.

In the county junior cup competition, Wirksworth Town Reserves lost 4-1 to Hopflower and Rowsley ‘86 Reserves also went out, 4-1 on penalties after a 3-3 draw after extra time at Nags Head.
