ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law has made central defender Greg Young his first signing since the Reds clinched the Blue Square Bet North title.
Law said: “I am delighted with the signing of Greg. At 6’3’’ he will give us plenty of power and he has loads of experience from the level we are now at, to bring to the team.
“He was a young kid at Grimsby when I was manager there.
“I gave him his chance and he did really well.
“When we first came to Alfreton, we brought him in on loan from Halifax Town but just as he got match fit, he was recalled.
“We have been interested in him for quite a while and fair play to him, while I know he didn’t want to drop down a level to join us last season, he has chosen to come to us now when he could have had substantially more money with a club in the division we have just left.”
Doncaster-born Young, 28, began his career with Grimsby Town as a trainee and he went on to make 28 appearances with the Mariners before going out on loan to Northwich Victoria.
Upon his release by Grimsby, Greg joined Halifax Town for three seasons from where he had loan spells with Northwich and Alfreton where he made six appearances at the start of the 2007/08 campaign. Joined Altrincham where he made 108 appearances over 19 months before moving to York City in August 2010.
He ended the campaign back on loan at Altrincham for the last two months.
Meanwhile, Alfreton Town’s 2011 Presentation Evening saw a packed house at the Boundary in South Normanton enjoy an excellent night.
Josh Law took the top accolade of his fellow team-mates when he was presented with the players’ player of the season award by guests of honour, Alfreton Town Council deputy mayor Rob Johnson and his consort, Cllr Emma Sowter.
The manager’s player of the season was presented to Nicky Law’s respected and trusted second-in-command Russ O’Neill.
Manager Law said: “Without Russ’s fantastic efforts, I would not be able to do my job”.
Law felt it was impossible to single one player out from what had been an outstanding effort by every member of the squad in winning the Blue Square Bet North.
The supporters’ player of the season was presented by association chairman John Staimar to striker Liam Hearn, who also received the leading goalscorer award from guests of honour Amber Valley Borough Council Mayor Ron Ashton and Mayoress Nancy Ashton.
