South Normanton Athletic remain on top of the East Midlands Counties League after a 2-2 draw at Radford on Saturday.

The first half hour was largely scruffy until Ant Fay produced the first shot on 31 minutes for Normanton.

Chances on goal were few and far between but the pace of the game was good. Then on 33 minutes, Dave Udoh for Radford hit a screaming shot that was kept out by Normanton’s man of the match Steve Smith in goal.

Smith then saved two more shots to keep Normanton in this game until the 40th minute when they got a deserved goal. Ant Fay crossed to Danny Roberts, whose diving header from six yards put Normanton 1-0 up at the halfway mark.

On 47 minutes, a Thomas Leighton midfield ball to Shane Newton saw him dispatch the ball into the bottom right hand corner to put the Shiners 2-0 up.

But then Radford’s Carey Knight got on the end of a cross to pull a goal back and threaten to spoil Normanton’s party. On 62 minutes, Thomas Leighton was penalised for bringing down Phil Hinton in the box but Dave Udoh put the ball high and wide.

Ant Fay hit the woodwork on 69 minutes which should have sealed the game, then Thomas Leighton was sent off for his second caution, and Phil Hinton scored on 87 minutes to deservedly earn a draw.

South Normanton entertain Borrowash Vic on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.
