Ambergate exited the Belper Nursing Cup at the semi final stage, losing 5-1 to a very good Holbrook Sports side at The O-Kra Ground.
The game started badly for Ambergate as Holbrook were awarded a penalty after Adam Bannister brought down their striker. Corey Bowler stepped up and sent Bannister the wrong way for the lead.
Ambergate looked for a quick equaliser and were unlucky on a couple of occasions. Firstly Craig Tipton latched onto a ack pass but saw his effort go narrowly over the bar. Then, following apunch by the Holbrook ‘keeper, Richard Briggs saw his looped effort clip the top of the bar and go over.
Within a few minutes, Holbrook doubled their lead. Bowler was given too much space on the left to feed the ball to Rob Fretwell, who turned and struck into the net from 20 yards.
Holbrook all but killed the game off shortly before the 20 minute mark. They broke down the right and, as Ambergate appealed in vain for offside, the ball was squared to the forward who struck across Bannister from the edge of the area.
As the half hour mark approached, Holbrook made the game safe with a fourth goal. Bowler clipped in a cross from the left and this was met by an unmarked forward to head home.
Despite the scoreline, Ambergate still pushed forward to get something out of the game and were rewarded shortly before half time. Tom Aston battled for the ball inside the area and managed to lay the ball back to Richard Briggs, who struck first time low into the bottom corner.
The second half began as badly as the first for Ambergate. Good work by Rob Fretwell freed the right winger who struck the ball across Bannister and into the far post.
The remaining half an hour of the game saw Ambergate’s best period of play. The introduction of Richard Green and Carl Harrison changed the focus and Ambergate started created more opportunities.
Within seconds of being on Harrison had already struck an effort towards goal and Green created three chances with one being well saved by the Holbrook ‘keeper.
The final whistle signaled the end of the cup run and the end of the season for Ambergate. For Holbrook, there is the final to look forward to.
