HEANOR TOWN 3 GLASSHOUGHTON WELFARE 0

After a mixed week of results, Heanor Town returned to winning ways with their fourth successive league win and their first home clean sheet of the season.

Richie Holmes and skipper Ian Clarke returned to the Lions’ line-up in a game they dominated for most of the 90 minutes.

Clarke had a deflected shot saved by visiting custodian Tom Draper after five minutes, followed by one from James Rushby.

A beautiful Rushby cross went begging before a Nico Degirolamo header from a free kick shaved an upright with Draper beaten.

Glasshoughton’s first attack took 27 minutes and then Mark Trueman’s shot was too high.

Dominant Heanor took a deserved lead when Richie Holmes headed home Clarke’s 31st minute corner.

The goalkick started the visitors for a while and Craig Maynard headed wide as they showed more spirit and beefed up their tackles. Lee Stevenson provided a low cross which both Nathan Benger and Draper missed and James Rushby doubled the Lions’ lead with a neat finish two minutes into the second period.

And on 51 minutes, Gary Webster’s shot shaved the bar as he looked for the goal he richly deserved.

Glasshoughton missed a golden chance after 54 minutes when substitute Kingsley Weatheral raced clear, looking suspiciously offside, but Damian Clark saved at his feet.

Draper saved a snap shot from Benger and Rushby saw a deflected shot just clear the bar as Heanor returned to the attack.

The referee did well to play an advantage on 81 minutes as Heanor players avoided some heavy challenges before Webster shot just over the angle.

John Hirst scrambled a powerful header from substitute Nick Langford off the line before Neil Grayson put the issue beyond doubt in the last minute with a delightful glancing header from Clarke’s corner.

And there was still time for an ambitious Stevenson shot from distance which caused Glasshoughton further anxiety as Draper was yards off his line. But the visitors survived.
