Ripley Town produced a stunning first half performance to race into a 3-0 lead against MRA Division Two leaders Ambergate on Saturday in this Challenge Cup game.
With a total of seven players missing for this fixture, Town’s resources were stretched to the limit. But with an average age of around 22, Ripley’s young players did the club proud.
Ripley went ahead when Joe Smith’s free kick was neatly dispatched by Darren Chatterton on 20 minutes. It was soon 2-0 when a delightful move was finished in style by Jay Harrison.
Town continued to pour forward and Harrison made it 3-0 before the break from the penalty spot after the lively Joe Crossley was brought down.
In the second half, the wet pitch deteriorated as did the game as tempers became a little frayed. Ambergate came more into the proceedings. Richard Clark tested the ‘keeper twice in the early stages of the half and the
The energetic Josh Squires was also causing problems with his pace.
Ambergate carried on dominating the half but could not get the breaks. This was evident again when Clark rounded the Ripley ‘keeper but lost his footing at a crucial moment and the chance was cleared.
This Saturday, Ripley are at home to Little Eaton in the league (2pm start) while Ambergate are in DCFA Junior Cup quarter final action against Ilkeston Rutland, which is a 1.15pm kick off at (provisionally) Kilburn Miners Welfare.
