ALFRETON Town face Southport for the third time this season when the Sandgrounders arrive at the Impact Arena to contest an FA Carlsberg Trophy first round tie on Saturday.
The sides have met twice already this season, both games being in the Blue Square Bet Premier with a goalless draw in Derbyshire in the second game of the season followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat for the Reds in Lancashire last Saturday.
Southport’s latest game was on Tuesday where they fell to an unlucky 2-0 defeat at league leaders Wrexham. The defeat brought to an end a fantastic winning run of eight consecutive games in the league away from home for Liam Watson’s side.
The same night Alfreton showed terrific spirit and desire to come from behind and beat Newport County 3-2 in a relegation six-pointer at the Impact Arena.
It is only the second time the sides have met in this competition, Alfreton making home advantage count in the only other game with a 1-0 win in the 2007/08 season thanks to Brian Cusworth’s tenth minute goal in front of just 187.
Reds boss Nicky Law has no injury worries ahead of the game and has the bonus of having winger Jamie Mullan available again after a three-match suspension so he could make changes.
There is prize money of £5000 for the winners as well as a place in Monday’s second round draw.
Kick-off at the Impact Arena is 3pm.
Should a replay be necessary, this will take place at Southport’s Haig Avenue ground on Tuesday (December 13) which will mean the scheduled Derbyshire Senior Cup third round tie at Gresley FC will have to be rearranged.
Supporters should note that this is an all-pay game.
If a replay is necessary in the Trophy, ATFC Supporters’ Association transport will depart at 4.15pm. If it is Derbyshire Senior Cup action, transport will depart at 5.30pm. Seats can be booked by contacting Mark Thorpe on 01773 836251.
