Philosophical Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law said he had no complaints after seeing his side fall to a narrow 1-0 home defeat against FC United of Manchester in the Vanarama National League North.

A best-of-the-season crowd of 1,087 witnessed an uninspiring game between two mid-table sides, with Alfreton unable to unlock the visiting defence.

“I can accept defeat,” admitted Law. “If I am honest, I don’t have any complaints whatsoever.

“When we started off the game in the first 20 minutes, I thought it was just going to be a matter of time before we scored the first goal. A case of how many we would get. But we didn’t capitalise on that bright start.

“I think United then came into the game,” reflected the Reds boss. “They slowed it down, which they knew they had to do because they didn’t want to get involved in a high-tempo, fast match.

“Credit to them for doing that. And once they had done it, we struggled for the remaining 75 minutes. I thought we huffed and we puffed, but we never looked like creating. We could have been out there until next week and I don’t think we would have mustered up a chance, and that is disappointing.

“United denied us space in behind. We needed people who could come and play to feet and make things happen, but we didn’t have that.

“In contrast, from the first minute to the last minute, their centre-forward, one striker up front on his own, received the ball to his feet and held it up. Not once in 90 minutes did we go and play in front of him and stop that ball.”

A frustrated Law added: “We just didn’t play with any thought. We weren’t good enough. We lacked a bit of end product, our final ball was poor and when we got into the top third, we were sloppy with the ball.

“I want to go and win every game that we play in and I want the players to do that. I am disappointed.

“Don’t take anything away from FC United. They came here and deserved the win. We showed what we could do for 20 minutes and then for 70, we did nothing. We just didn’t do enough.”
