Ambergate grind out a win

Ambergate FC ground out a 1-0 win against a battling Belper Tavern Rovers side to continue their unbeaten run in pre-season.

The first half was a midfield battle between both sides with not many chances being created.

The first chance came for Ambergate as Jack Henley beat the left back and put in a great cross which was cleared in the six-yard box as Tom Smith looked to scored on his debut.

Tavern were trying to put pressure on Ambergate but did not really test Dan Newton in goal.

Just before half-time, Craig Siddons put in a cross which was met on the volley by Richard Briggs but the shot was tipped over for a corner.

The deadlock was broken shortly after half-time. Rob Gregory was sent down the right wing and his cross was tipped on to the crossbar by the ‘keeper and Gary Conway was on hand to tap in on the line.

Gregory, Conway and Richard West saw goalbound shots blocked and Tavern pushed on in the final few minutes for an equaliser but Ambergate stood firm and came away with the victory.
