Ambergate gain the local derby honours

MRA Division Two

Bargate Rovers Reserves 1

Ambergate FC 4

AMBERGATE deservedly gained the bragging rights but they had to work hard to come out on top in a hard-fought local derby.

Ambergate got off to a good start and took the lead after Bestwick’s through-ball sent Shaun Welch clear and he slotted home.

The lead was soon doubled when Welch crossed into the area and when Bargate failed to clear, Andy Stevenson volleyed home.

It looked as if Ambergate were going to cruise it from this point but the hosts worked hard to stay in touch and after Staton had a goal chalked off for offside, Rovers were thrown a lifeline before half time. A corner was only half-cleared and Phil Fern poked the ball in with the aid of a deflection.

This galvanised the hosts and they began the second half well but Ambergate’s back line held firm.

As Bargate began to tire, Ambergate exerted more pressure and they struck the killer blow when Welch again slotted home after good work by Stevenson.

The icing on the victory cake came at the death when Bestwick’s free kick was headed on to a post by Stevenson, who followed up with a volley which was brilliantly saved by Leatherland, but Stevenson managed to scramble the ball across goal for Chris Evans to tap home.
