Alfreton Town release a raft of players

Alfreton Town have released a raft of players including veterans Paul Clayton and Liam Hearn.

The Reds have confirmed their retained list for the 2017/18 season and there are only six first team players on it – but two of those may yet leave.

Tom Allan, Brad McGowan, Craig Westcarr and Adam Smith will all stay with the club.

And while Niall Heaton and Mark Shelton are also named on the retained list, negotiations are under way for possible transfers for both players.

Players leaving include keeper Fabian Spiess and ex Sheffield United defender Terry Kennedy.

Alfreton are looking for a fresh start under new management.

A club spokesperson said: “With the appointment of new boss John McDermott and fresh investment into the club; the Reds are aiming for a reinvention and a transformation in fortunes as we prepare for the new campaign and prepare for a promotion challenging season.”

Players released include: Ryan Wilson, Sam Smith, Todd Jordan, Paul Clayton, Fabian Spiess, Andrew Monkhouse, Terry Kennedy, Adam Priestley, Liam Hearn, Paul Marshall, Callum McFadzean.

Loanees Wes Atkinson and Jordan Richards have returned to their parent clubs.

Alfreton have also kept hold of fringe and academy players Oli Cox, Ellis Evans, Morgan Brough and MoZiah Selassie.
