FA Cup replay success for Holbrook

FA Cup with Budweiser

Extra Preliminary Round Replay -

Greenwood Meadows 0

Holbrook Sports 2

A GOAL in each half took Holbrook Sports to a 2-0 FA Cup replay victory over fellow East Midlands Counties League rivals Greenwood Meadows on Tuesday evening.

Missing from the first game for Holbrook was Niall Mather (work) but club captain Robbie Harrison and Paul Campbell returned.

The replay began on an uneven pitch although both sides tried to get the ball dowjn and play.

However, it soon became apparent that this wasn’t the way forward as both sets of players struggled to put three passes together on the hard, bobbly surface.

Both sides began well but, as with Saturday’s first game, the final touches were lacking in the last third of the pitch.

Sports went ahead on the half-hour when a long and accurate free kick from keeper Damian Clark found Paul Campbell on the edge of the six yard box and his header looped over the despairing Greenwood keeper and into the far corner.

Holbrook had the upper hand for a short spell and Ant Tansley had a shot blocked before another Campbell header went close.

The last ten minutes of the first half was all Greenwood with Clark dominating his box well as he produced a couple of very good punched clearances from dangerous crosses and a couple of saves diving to his left managed to see his side safely through to half time.

The second half was a scrappy and niggly affair with a flurry of yellow cards littering proceedings.

Neither side managed to get to grips with the surface and the visitors ground out their way towards full time.

Paul Fisher had an excellent strike superbly tipped around a post by the home keeper.

There were seven minutes of injury time added, the fifth one of which saw Holbrook finally wrap up victory when a cross from neatly chested into the corner of the net by Emeka Ejiofor from the edge of the six-yard box.
