But Karl Krikken’s men made some positive strides in their drawn game with Surrey, a result that ended a run of four straight defeats in the division.
Derbyshire’s first innings total of 452 was based around three key contributions, from skipper Wayne Madsen (152), from overseas star Shivnarine Chanderpaul (129) and from wicketkeeper Richard Johnson (72).
Surrey’s repl y of 553-8 declared featured fine knocks of 154 from Arun Harinath and a sparkling 192 from former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.
Second time around, Derbyshire made it 164-3 before the captains shook hands and the game ended in a draw.
Chesney Hughes made a quickfire 68, Billy Godleman 28, Chanderpaul 24 not out and Wes Durston 29 not out.
Surrey’s England hopeful Chris Tremlett took eight wickets in the game as he continues to target a return to international cricket after an injury layoff.
Derbyshire are due to start a three-day friendly against Durham MCCU today (Wednesday) ahead of a YB40 match against Essex at Leek on Sunday.
