Denby CC 1sts lost to defending champions Swarkestone on Saturday in a rain-affected Derbyshire Premier League encounter.

The home side won the toss and asked Denby to bat first.

In their 25 overs, Denby found the going tough and wickets fell at regular intervals as they eventually made 73-9.

Alexander Eyre opened the innings and top scored with 17. The other batsmen to get into double figures were Rehan Hassan (11), Daniel Burgoyne (12 not out) and Will Davis (10).

For Swarkestone, Bruce Dilks took 3-28, Tom Knight 4-17 and Garry Park 2-13.

In reply, Swarkestone reached 77-4 in 21.1 overs to win the encounter by six wickets.

Will Davis dismissed Chris Durham in the first over of the innings but fellow opener Wayne White then took charge with 39 and he was helped by 14 not out from Thomas Hamilton.

Like most sides in the leagues on Saturday, Denby’s other teams saw their games fall foul of the weather.

On Sunday, Denby 2nds were in Bayley Cup 2nd round action when they took on Abbots Bromley and lost to the Staffordshire side by the narrow margin of just two runs.

The home side batted first and scored 183 all out from 45 overs with Darren Yeomans top scoring for Abbots Bromley with 94.

Denby then fell agonisingly short of victory when they were dismissed for 181 in the 42nd over to lose by just two runs.
