Denby CC 1sts produced a fine fightback on Saturday to get the better of visitors Alfreton CC in the Derbyshire Premier League.
At one stage in their innings, Joe Greenhalgh’s side found themselves in the perilous position of 78-7, but turned it round to such an extent that they were able to beat their visitors by the comfortable margin of 48 runs.
Denby lost the toss and Alfreton decided to bowl first. This looked to have been an excellent decision as none of Denby’s top four of Alex Eyre, Liam Glenn, Rehan Hassan and Brad Davis scored more than five runs.
Enter young Derbyshire all-rounder Greg Cork with the score at 20-4 and plenty of repair work to do.
He found a willing ally in Joe Greenhalgh and the pair added 35 before Greenhalgh was out for 22.
Two more quick wickets left the score at 78-7 but Cork was assisted now by Will Davis and the pair added 46 more runs before Davis was dismissed for 22.
Cork kept on batting to the end and was last man out for a crucial 63, made from 110 balls, as Denby were eventually all out for 153.
All the Alfreton bowlers were tight and their batsmen sound scoring as tricky as Denby had, when they replied.
Anthony Mosca acquitted himself well at the top of the innings for Alfreton with 40 but no-one else got past 11 as the Denby bowlers applied the pressure.
Hassan and Greenhalgh took three apiece as Alfreton were all out for 105.
