Alfreton CC 1sts were one of the few sides in Derbyshire to play during a rain-hit fixture list on Saturday, but the wait goes on for their first win of the season.
Hosting title-chasing Sandiacre, the game was reduced to 25 overs a side, in which the visitors made 172 all out before Alfreton replied with 95-6 to end with a losing draw.
Asked to bat first, Sandiacre got off to a quick start, racing to 28 before the first wicket fell, that of James Chapman at the hands of Callum Spencer.
Spencer (4-35) then had the visitors wobbling as he took three further wickets to leave the score on 61-4 and Sandiacre needing to rebuild.
Robert Cook and Daniel Wheeldon did just that, ensuring the next wicket didn’t fall until the score had reached 95, when the latter was caught on the boundary for 20 off Andy Gwatkin.
Gwatkin then got his second in quick succession as Sandiacre fell to 92-6 and Alfreton were confident they could reduce the visitors to a total that they could chase.
Cook (42) and John Trueman (30 off 17 balls) had other ideas though, as some lower order hitting got Sandiacre up to 172 off just 24.2 overs.
In reply, Anthony Mosca and Gwatkin started strongly until pace duo Wheeldon and Ryan McFadyean got in amongst the Alfreton top order.
Wheeldon (2-29) and McFadyean (3-20) shared the first five wickets between them as the home side fell to 39-5.
Captain Alex Mace (39) and Elliot Savidge (18*) secured Alfreton the losing draw, one which looked unlikely after the first five wickets had fallen early on.
Next up for Alfreton is a trip to Ticknall on Saturday.
