ALFRETON Town manager Nicky Law admits his side will make their bow at non league’s top table with a trip into the unknown.
Last season’s Blue Square Bet North champions kick-off the Blue Square Bet Premier Division season with a trip to face Hayes & Yeading United, a side hardly anything is known about.
Law commented: “I have always said it is not about what the opposition do, it is what we do. Yes, we will have to have a different mindset this season. We have had a couple of seasons of win, win, win, but that is certainly not going to be the case this time and we have to be prepared for it.
“To give ourselves the best chance of picking up points, we will need every single player doing the things we are good at. That doesn’t guarantee you results, but we know what we are about and if we stick to doing those things, we increase our chances of being successful.
“It is probably going to be the case with the majority of teams we face in the first few months, particularly the southern-based ones.
“We have played Southport and Kettering in recent times, and Cambridge United and Mansfield last season, but teams change so much each year now.
“We will have opposing teams watched two or three times once things settle down and circumstances dictate we can.
“Having said that though, it is not going to be much different to last season where we also had a few unknown quantities.”
Law is also urging the town and local community to get firmly behind the Reds, particularly in home games.
“We have got to make Alfreton a place where people are not relishing their visit, and that is where our fans can play a vital part this season, as they did last, if I am honest.
“We are a nice club with a nice set-up and a very nice pitch, but we need our fans to be really vocal and make it not such an attractive place to come.”
Goalkeeper Ross Turner has penned non-contract terms with the Reds and he has been given squad number 18.
Law is mindful of the need for experience this season and explained: “Ross has agreed to come on board again. He will do a couple of days a week coaching with Dan Lowson and back him up.
“That doesn’t mean we are still not looking for another keeper, but we have to be careful. It would perhaps be difficult going with a young rookie although there is still an opportunity to do that.”
