RIPLEY swimmer Emma Smithurst, 17, had a hugely successful senior international competition in Canada last weekend.
She gained a silver medal in the 200-metre individual medley on Friday with a personal best time of 2 minutes 16.25 seconds and then went one better by winning gold on Saturday as she dominated the 400-metre individual medley.

Leading from the start, Emma powered her way to the gold medal in a time of 4 minutes 45.10 seconds, knocking two seconds off her personal best time and, subject to ratification, also set an English age group record.

The event was held in Quebec City, and the inaugural competition showcased the 2012 Olympic potential hopefuls of Great Britain, Canada and France.

The meet coincided with Quebec City's 400th anniversary; North America's oldest city. There are plans are to rotate host countries each year leading into London.

The victory capped another successful season for Derventio eXcel member Emma who will now takes a well earned rest from training in August before returning in the first week of September.
